A 17-year-old boy was fatally shot during a high school football game in Bakersfield, California, and police say a 15-year-old suspect was arrested the following day on murder and criminal-street-gang participation allegations.

The shooting happened shortly after 8 p.m. Friday, August 21, at Independence High School as the school was hosting a football game. Bakersfield police said officers arrived to find the teenage victim wounded inside the stadium gates, south of the football field. He was taken to Kern Medical and later pronounced dead.

For students, parents and families who had come to watch the first football game of the season, the violence abruptly transformed an ordinary school tradition into a crime scene.

Police Say the Shooting Followed an Altercation

Investigators said their preliminary findings indicate the shooting began with an altercation involving a group of people.
