Anne Hathaway disclosed in a recent interview on the New York Times Popcast that she spent 10 years - from age 30 to 40 - legally blind in her left eye. The condition, an early-onset cataract that typically does not appear until a person is in their sixties, went undiagnosed and untreated for most of that decade. She did not discuss it publicly during the years it was happening.

‘This is maybe too much information,’ she said on the podcast. ‘I was half blind for 10 years. I had an early onset cataract, really, and it impacted my vision so much that I was basically legally blind out of my left eye.’ She eventually had surgery to correct the condition. It was only after the surgery, she said, that she understood how significantly her vision had been affected.

The Films Made During Those Years

Hathaway is 43. The decade she describes covers her thirties - a period that includes some of the most visible work of her career. During those years she filmed The Dark Knight Rises, in which she played Catwoman opposite Christian Bale. She filmed Les Miserables, for which she won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in 2013. She appeared in Interstellar, Oceans Eight, and a range of other studio productions.

Fans who learned of the disclosure responded on social media with a particular kind of stunned admiration. One widely shared comment noted that she had completed years of major films during that period without once mentioning the condition publicly. Another described it as a decade of demanding physical performances done with half her visual field compromised.

What an Early-Onset Cataract Does

A cataract is a clouding of the eye’s lens that causes progressively blurred vision, reduced color perception, and sensitivity to glare and light. The condition is strongly associated with aging and typically begins to affect people in their sixties. Early-onset cases, while less common, do occur and can be triggered by various factors including inflammation, certain medications, or genetic predisposition.

The condition is correctable with surgery. Cataract surgery is one of the most commonly performed elective procedures in the United States, with high success rates. Hathaway said that after surgery, she understood for the first time how much her vision had degraded. The contrast between what she had been seeing and what she could see afterward clarified how significant the impairment had been.

Why She Didn’t Talk About It

Hathaway did not explain in detail during the podcast why she chose not to disclose the condition while she was experiencing it. The interviewer did not press on that point. The framing of the disclosure - beginning with the phrase ‘this is maybe too much information’ - suggested it was not something she had previously discussed publicly or even in interviews where health questions might arise.

The fact that the revelation emerged on a podcast with a relatively modest audience, and spread quickly through social media after the fact, is consistent with a pattern of private disclosures that gain unexpected reach. Hathaway was not promoting a project related to vision health or advocacy. The question arose naturally in conversation and she answered it.

A Career at Full Speed Now

Hathaway’s disclosure arrives during what has been described as a career resurgence. She has five films releasing in 2026 alone - including The Devil Wears Prada 2, a sequel to the 2006 film in which she played the lead alongside Meryl Streep. Her presence at the 2026 Academy Awards generated significant attention, and she has continued to be a dominant figure in entertainment media through the year.

She is now 43. Surgery corrected the vision problem she carried through her thirties. The decade of films she made while half blind stands as its own particular record - not of suffering, which she did not characterize it as, but of the distance between what a public career shows and what the person living it is actually navigating.
