After the Los Angeles wildfires destroyed his family home, Billy Crystal returned to the ruins and found something that survived: a garden stone engraved with the word “Laughter.” In a new interview, the actor described why that small object has stayed with him as he prepares a one-man show about the loss and the life his family built there.

A Rock Among the Ruins

Crystal and his wife Janice had lived in the Pacific Palisades house since 1979. When the family returned after the January 2025 fire, their daughter Lindsay noticed the stone. It was a familiar object from the garden, not a valuable possession recovered from inside the house.

Why That Word Stayed With Him

Crystal told PEOPLE that laughter helped carry him through earlier hardships, including losing his father when he was 15. The stone gave that history a physical form at a moment when so much of the family home had disappeared.

Turning the Loss Into a Show

Crystal’s solo production, titled 860 after the home’s address, is scheduled to open on October 21 at the Imperial Theatre in New York. It draws on comedy, personal memories and grief. Crystal and his wife also plan to rebuild their Pacific Palisades home, returning to the site where they raised their daughters.
