Man Charged With Murder in Girlfriend’s Disappearance

Kendrick Deshaun Bruce, 30, was charged in Pierce County Superior Court on May 22 with first-degree murder, two counts of second-degree identity theft, and unlawful disposal of human remains. The charges relate to the disappearance of his girlfriend, Dawn Dill-Pickett, 37.

According to charging documents filed by prosecutors, Bruce allegedly killed Dill-Pickett sometime between March 1 and March 28, 2026. The charges also specified that the crimes involved an intimate partner relationship. Prosecutors alleged that after the woman’s disappearance, Bruce used her financial accounts and impersonated her through text messages to deceive family and friends.

Investigation Begins With Missing Person Report

The case began when a friend in Idaho requested a welfare check on April 1 after not hearing from Dill-Pickett since March 23. Tacoma officers responding to her apartment initially found nothing suspicious, though a neighbor reported not seeing her for approximately one month.

Friends and family members became alarmed after examining recent messages allegedly sent from the woman’s phone. According to charging documents, the wording and behavior in these messages were inconsistent with her normal communication patterns. Friends told detectives that Dill-Pickett had been in a “chaotic/dysfunctional relationship” with Bruce, who managed the business where she worked and had recently been fired for theft.

Procedural Evidence and Investigation Details

Prosecutors presented multiple lines of evidence linking Bruce to the alleged crimes. Financial records and surveillance video showed Bruce using the woman’s Chime account at a 7-Eleven in Puyallup on March 28 and transferring $150 from her Cash App account to himself.

Cell phone records and GPS data placed Bruce, his vehicle, and Dill-Pickett’s phone together in several locations after the woman was last seen, according to the declaration. During a search of Bruce’s Jeep Grand Cherokee, cadaver dogs alerted to the vehicle’s cargo area, rear door, and back seat. Internet search history recovered from Bruce’s Google account included searches such as “how to knock someone out,” “how long does it take a body to start stinking after death,” “how to clean up blood from carpet,” and “how long does rigor mortis last.”

On May 20, detectives executed a search warrant at Dill-Pickett’s apartment and reported finding what appeared to be blood evidence in the entryway, living room, hallway, and bathroom.

Victim Context and Family Statement

Before her disappearance, Dill-Pickett had shown visible injuries she attributed to Bruce, according to statements given to detectives. Her child’s father told police that Dill-Pickett had previously warned: “If anything happens to me, Kendrick did it.” He also reported that Bruce had allegedly threatened that “Nobody would find your body.”

Bryant Smith, Dill-Pickett’s former partner and father to her child, said in court filings: “She was a genuine, genuine person, she was down to earth. We need closure and to be able to give Dawn a final resting place. She was such a beautiful soul, the thought of her decomposing in the wilderness somewhere just guts me. Her son deserves to have a final sendoff.”

Current Status

The victim’s body has not yet been located. In court filings, prosecutors argued that Bruce should remain in custody, citing that he has no fixed address or employment and poses an “extreme flight risk.” At a hearing on May 22, a judge set his bail at $2 million. Bruce has not entered a plea to the charges. Under the presumption of innocence, he has not been convicted of any charges and the outcome will be determined through court proceedings.
