A Killing Inside a Family Home

A Connecticut man has been charged with murder after prosecutors said he entered a home before dawn and killed the man who was staying there with his estranged wife while children were also inside.

Joshua Freitag, 33, faces charges of murder, home invasion and two counts of risk of injury to a child in connection with the August 18 death of 34-year-old Mark Morgan in Somers. A judge kept Freitag’s bond at $1.5 million during his arraignment the following day.

State police said two minors were at the scene during the violence but were not physically injured.

Prosecutors Describe a Pre-Dawn Entry

According to prosecutors, Freitag and his estranged wife were going through a divorce, and she had changed the locks at the South Road residence.

Tolland State’s Attorney Craig Nowak alleged in court that Freitag parked some distance from the house shortly after 4 a.m., broke through a sliding glass door and went upstairs, where Morgan was fatally shot.

State police later detained Freitag outside without incident, according to a police summary cited by CT Insider.

A handgun was recovered at the scene.

The allegations remain unproven, and Freitag is presumed innocent unless convicted.

An Estranged Marriage and a New Relationship

Freitag’s attorney, Anthony Spinella, identified Morgan in court as the estranged wife’s new boyfriend.

The residence was Freitag’s home, according to the reporting, while his estranged wife was staying there with their children and Morgan.

State police also alleged that Freitag and Morgan had a history of conflict and had been involved in fights before.

That history may form part of the prosecution’s case, but authorities and the court will ultimately have to determine what evidence is admissible and what can be proved.

What is already clear is how deeply personal the setting was: an estranged marriage, a new relationship, a shared family home and children nearby.

A Mother’s Grief Enters the Courtroom

The human cost of the killing became unmistakable during Freitag’s arraignment.

CT Insider reported that Morgan’s mother became emotional in court as prosecutors described the allegations surrounding her son’s death. Her reaction underscored what can easily disappear behind charge sheets and court terminology: Morgan was not simply the victim named in a homicide file, but a 34-year-old son whose family was hearing the prosecution’s account of his final moments.

The presence of children inside the residence adds another layer to the case.

Authorities said two minors were there but escaped physical injury. Freitag’s two risk-of-injury charges relate to children, although the public reporting does not establish every factual allegation prosecutors will use to support those counts.

The Criminal Case Is Just Beginning

Freitag was arrested after state police responded to the Somers residence and later appeared in state Superior Court in Rockville.

His $1.5 million bond remained in place at arraignment.

The murder and home-invasion accusations are serious, but they are still allegations. The prosecution must prove its case in court, and Freitag is entitled to defend himself against each charge.

For Morgan’s family, those proceedings will unfold after a loss that has already happened.

And for the children who were inside the home, the case began not in a courthouse but in a place that should have offered ordinary family security. Their physical survival is an important part of the story. So is the fact that one man died there, leaving a family to face a legal process that may take far longer than the few minutes in which the violence allegedly unfolded.
