One Dead After U-Haul Truck Explodes in Lewiston, Idaho Shopping Center

A U-Haul truck exploded at approximately 7:15 a.m. on December 13, 2025, in the parking lot of a shopping center in Lewiston, Idaho anchored by an Old Navy store. The victim, Douglas R. Petersen, 61, of Meridian, Idaho, was pronounced dead at the scene. The explosion caused significant structural damage to the adjacent Courtyard Marriott hotel and the Old Navy store and scattered debris across the parking lot and into nearby trees. No additional injuries were reported.

Cause and Investigation

The Lewiston Fire Department concluded its investigation by December 15, 2025, finding no indication the explosion was criminal in nature. Evidence pointed to a propane leak within the truck’s cargo area, which contained flammable materials including gasoline and propane tanks. The exact source of ignition could not be determined. Fire Marshal Julian Sorrell confirmed there was no sign of criminal activity and characterized the event as a tragic accident.

Notably, no fire followed the blast despite the presence of flammable materials, which likely prevented further damage or additional casualties. Multiple agencies responded to the scene: the Lewiston Fire Department, Lewiston Police Department, Idaho State Police, the City of Lewiston Streets Division, and Nez Perce County officials. The property was subsequently turned over to owners for post-incident remediation.
