The Conflict Has Already Carried a Human and Financial Toll

The Associated Press reported that the conflict began February 28 and has killed 18 U.S. service members. AP also reported that the fighting had cost U.S. taxpayers more than $37.5 billion by September 4.

Trump told reporters that he understood Vance’s reluctance to use the word ‘war’ because U.S. strikes were intermittent and no American ground troops had been deployed into Iran. He described the conflict as a military conflict and said it was not large by comparison with past U.S. wars.

Then U.S. Warships Were Targeted

The next day, the U.S. military said an American aircraft carrier and a destroyer had evaded multiple ballistic-missile attacks. No U.S. personnel were injured in those attacks, according to the military account reported by AP.

U.S. forces then struck three Iranian oil tankers. The military said two were permanently disabled and a third, which was unladen, was destroyed. It described the vessels as part of a network helping finance Iran’s Revolutionary Guard and allied armed groups.

Iran Said It Struck Back

Iranian state media later said Iran had targeted American vessels and oil tankers in response. AP said those claims could not be independently confirmed at the time of publication.

The exchanges followed the collapse of negotiations over Iran’s nuclear program and months of attacks that have also disrupted commercial shipping. The Strait of Hormuz remains a central pressure point because a large share of global oil and natural-gas shipments pass through the region.

The Language and the Operations Are Moving in Different Directions

The administration’s wording emphasizes limits: no ground invasion, intermittent strikes and a conflict it does not consistently describe as a war. The military sequence over the weekend showed a different kind of movement, with U.S. warships targeted and American forces striking Iranian oil assets at sea.
