Authorities Allege Friends Conspired to Steal From Greg Biffle Estate After Plane Crash
By Riley Monroe. May 14, 2026
Less than a month after former NASCAR driver Greg Biffle and his family died in a plane crash on December 18, 2025, authorities began investigating allegations of theft and financial crimes targeting the family’s estate. More than 40 search warrants have been issued as investigators focus on a married couple with personal connections to the Biffle family.
Iredell County Sheriff Darren Campbell stated that the suspects “did a lot of planning in an attempt to make a financial gain” off Biffle’s death. The couple has not been arrested or formally charged, and investigators are withholding their names pending further developments.
The Break-In
On January 8, 2026, police responded to a break-in at the Biffle family’s Mooresville, North Carolina estate. According to incident reports, $30,000 in cash was stolen, along with two Glock handguns and NASCAR memorabilia. Investigators believe the suspects gained entry to a safe within the home.
Security footage from the residence showed a masked individual with apparent familiarity with the home’s layout, including knowledge of camera locations, closets, and a safe room. A detective wrote in a search warrant affidavit that “the amount of time spent inside the residence, specifically the master bedroom area, proves the suspect knew where items were located they were looking for.”
Personal Connections
According to search warrant affidavits, the husband being investigated met Biffle when the former NASCAR driver used his private helicopter to deliver aid to hurricane victims after Hurricane Helene. The woman attended a Christmas party at the Biffle home in Mooresville just weeks before the fatal plane crash.
During Biffle’s celebration of life, law enforcement noticed one attendee changing their demeanor and body language when near police officers. The same individual was later linked to surveillance footage of the burglary through facial recognition and physical proportions.
Financial Crimes Alleged
Beyond the physical burglary, investigators allege a coordinated scheme to access and steal funds from the family’s financial accounts. Bank, Venmo, and PayPal accounts tied to the Biffle family were accessed online using personal information obtained during the break-in. Perpetrators allegedly changed phone numbers and email addresses to gain control of accounts.
Money was then transferred to accounts not belonging to the family and used for unauthorized purchases, according to search warrant documents. At least one fraudulent check tied to Biffle’s business interests was cashed, and other attempts were made to access additional accounts.
Federal Involvement
The U.S. Secret Service became involved in the investigation after authorities identified the alleged financial crimes. A Secret Service contractor used facial recognition technology to help obtain two search warrants. Search warrants were executed in late April at two locations-one in Denver and one in Mooresville-connected to the person being investigated.
The Victims
Biffle, 58, was an accomplished NASCAR driver with 19 wins in the Cup Series and championships in multiple racing divisions. He was widely respected for his humanitarian efforts, particularly his aid to relief operations in western North Carolina following Hurricane Helene in 2024.
His family-wife Cristina Grossu Biffle, 14-year-old daughter Emma, and 5-year-old son Ryder-all perished in the plane crash on December 18, 2025. The aircraft was bound for Florida when it crashed shortly after takeoff in Statesville, North Carolina.
Estate Administration
The Biffle Estate has stated it is “fully cooperating” with law enforcement investigation. No arrests have been made as of May 3, 2026. The investigation remains ongoing.
