Josh Duggar, the disgraced 19 Kids and Counting star serving time at FCI Seagoville in Texas for downloading and possessing child sexual abuse material, had his monthly commissary spending limit cut from $360 to $25 following a prison incident. According to sources cited by the U.S. Sun, an inmate mixed urine with chemicals purchased through the commissary and used the concoction to burn a guard. In response, prison officials temporarily slashed commissary spending limits across the facility - first for half the prison population, then the other half - reducing the monthly allowance to $25 for all inmates regardless of their involvement.

Impact of the Restriction

The commissary at FCI Seagoville offers meats, snacks, hygiene products, and other items that many inmates rely on to supplement meals. An insider told the U.S. Sun that “people are having to buy food from the commissary or go hungry,” citing complaints about expired food, insufficient portion sizes, and a February 2024 lawsuit filed by inmate Jua-Deno Peterson alleging meals fell below the 2,000-calorie daily threshold and that food was stored near trash. FCI Seagoville denied receiving formal complaints and maintained that meals meet national standards. Prison officials said the commissary restriction was temporary and that inmates would be reimbursed for the difference once the investigation concluded.

Duggar’s Commissary Habits

Before the restriction, Duggar reportedly relied on his parents, Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar, to fund his commissary account and was said to have pressured them to send more money to cover name-brand snacks, meat packs, and coffee, according to In Touch Weekly. With the $25 limit in effect, a single pack of bacon ($3.85) or a bag of coffee ($6.50) accounted for a significant portion of his monthly budget. Duggar is serving a 12-year sentence.
