Woman Found After 27 Years Hidden in Parents' Home Was Days From Death,

Authorities in Świętochłowice, Poland, rescued a woman named Mirella in July 2025 after she had reportedly been hidden inside her parents’ home for 27 years. Now 42, Mirella had disappeared at age 15 and was found in an emaciated state, suffering from severe open wounds and infections that doctors said left her days from death. Her parents had told neighbors for decades that she had gone missing.

The Discovery

Police initially responded to a call about a domestic quarrel at the residence. Mirella’s 81-year-old mother answered the door and denied any problems; Mirella herself also denied issues. Officers grew suspicious when they observed severe injuries on Mirella’s legs. Emergency medical personnel were summoned and found her condition critical.

Neighbors told reporters that Mirella had allegedly been confined to a small room in the home with limited access to hygiene facilities. Doctors determined the wounds on her legs had been exposed to unsanitary conditions over an extended period. Physicians who examined her concluded she was “days away from death due to infection,” according to PEOPLE.

The Disappearance

Mirella vanished from public view around 1998, when she was 15. Her parents reportedly told neighbors she had gone missing and later claimed she had been reunited with biological relatives. No official missing person report was ever filed. Her former school principal confirmed she had been withdrawn from school in September 1997, four months into high school, “at the request of her parents.”

Neighbors who knew her as a child remembered Mirella as healthy and active - a girl who enjoyed climbing trees. The contrast with her condition in 2025 prompted an investigation by local prosecutors into possible physical and psychological abuse.

Investigation Status

Since her rescue, Mirella has spoken to police and insisted she was not held against her will. Local prosecutors are investigating as possible abuse; no charges had been filed against her parents as of initial reporting.
